What Magazines Work with the S&W MP 15-22?

I’ve recently started using the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 for some recreational shooting, and I had a few questions about magazines for this firearm. Specifically, I’m curious about the following aspects:

Compatibility

  • OEM vs. Aftermarket: I know Smith & Wesson makes their own magazines, but I’m also seeing a lot of discussions around aftermarket options, particularly from brands like CMMG. Can anyone share their experiences with aftermarket magazines? Are they reliable, or do they cause any feeding issues?

Magazine Extensions

  • Upgrades: Has anyone tried magazine extensions for the M&P 15-22? I’m looking for options that increase the capacity without compromising reliability. What are the best brands or modifications out there that you’ve found successful?

Troubleshooting Issues

  • Common Problems: I’ve noticed that my current magazines sometimes have feeding failures. Are there any common troubleshooting tips you can provide? Whether it’s maintenance routines or specific tips to ensure they function smoothly, any insight would be great.

Purchasing Options

  • Where to Buy: Lastly, any recommendations on where to purchase these magazines? Online retailers, local gun shops, or even second-hand options? I’m mindful of quality and price, so I’d appreciate any leads you guys might have.

Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from your experiences.

I’m looking into magazines for my S&W MP 15-22 as well. The standard 10-rounders work fine, but I hear there are 25-round options available. Any recommendations?

I also prefer the 25-rounders! The ProMag ones seem popular for a bit more capacity. They feed well too.

Did you guys know that there are even 50-round drum magazines for the MP 15-22? I haven’t tried one, but the concept is pretty wild.

I agree, @shelly65, ProMag has a decent reputation. I’ve used their 25-rounders, and they work great for me too! But I read some mixed reviews about the drums.

That sounds like fun! But how reliable are they? I’m cautious about jamming issues.

I have both the standard and aftermarket magazines. Honestly, the aftermarket ones can be hit or miss in performance. The Magpul ones are generally good but can be a bit pricey.

Great point! Are there any specific brands you recommend avoiding?

I’m not a fan of the Tapco mags; I’ve had issues with feeding. Stick with well-reviewed options like ProMag or Magpul and you should be safe!

It’s good to remember that not all magazines are created equal! The S&W models are pretty solid overall, but I’ve had my share of duds.

I’ve heard mixed things about Tapco too. I think I’ll avoid those.

Can someone explain what makes a good magazine besides capacity? Is it just about reliability during feeding?

Great question! A good magazine should also have a reliable spring and feed lips. Consistency is key!

I’ve had great luck with the Magpul PMAG 22 GL9s for my MP 15-22. They feed smoothly, and cleaning them is a breeze. I just use a simple solvent and a toothbrush for maintenance.

That’s good to know! I heard those magazines are quite sturdy. Do you experience any feeding issues after extended use?

I prefer the factory S&W magazines. They seem to be the best fit and rarely cause jams. That said, I do clean them often to keep them in top shape.

I agree! I’ve had fewer problems with factory mags. A quick soak in cleaning solution works wonders!

I’ve struggled with jamming issues in my aftermarket mags. What techniques do you all use for keeping the feed lips clean?

A soft cloth and some oil usually do the trick for me! Keep that area clean and you should see improvement.

Are there any common mistakes when cleaning these magazines? I feel like I’m missing something important every time.
