Hey there! New Mexico is great for grouse hunting, especially around the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The area has plenty of access points and diverse habitats.

Absolutely! I love the Jemez Mountains area too—lots of cover and plenty of birds. Just be ready to hike a bit.

I’ve had some success hunting near the Gila Wilderness. You can find birds in open fields near the forest edges. Make sure to check seasonal regulations!

That’s a solid tip! I’m curious, how did you find access points there?

The access points to Gila can be tricky; I usually enter from the north via Highway 15, then go off-road a bit into the fields. The scenery is breathtaking too!

How about the Pecos Wilderness? I’ve heard good things but never tried it myself. Anyone have experiences there?

Pecos is amazing! Lots of water sources attract grouse. Best time is early morning when they’re out feeding.

Thanks for the advice! What’s the best season to hunt in New Mexico? I’m planning a trip soon.

You want to go from mid-September to late October. That’s when they are most active and easier to spot.

I remember once hunting late season and missed out! It was so cold, couldn’t feel my fingers. Lesson learned: dress warmly!

Haha! That’s a classic! Good boots are essential too—nothing worse than wet feet out there.

Really appreciate all the input! Are there any specific gear recommendations you guys have for grouse hunting?

You’d want a lightweight shotgun, around 12 gauge, with good shot shells. Comfortable clothing is crucial too!

Don’t forget a good dog! My lab has found more birds than I could ever hope to. At least he keeps me entertained!

Grouse hunting in New Mexico is a blast! I recommend a good 12-gauge shotgun. They are versatile and can handle various ammo types well.

Absolutely! I also love using #7.5 shot for grouse. It offers a good balance between spread and knockdown power.

Don’t forget about your clothing! Dressing in layers works best. It gets chilly in the mornings, but can warm up quickly.

Great point! Also, make sure to wear good boots; you’ll be doing a lot of walking!

I suggest a good pair of binoculars too. Spotting them before they take off can make all the difference!
