What's the Best Brass Polishing Media for Reloading?

I’m looking to get my brass casings back to that shiny, like-new condition for reloading, and I could really use some advice on the best polishing media out there. I’ve heard various things about walnut shells, corncob, and even some specialized polishing compounds.

Here are a few questions I have:

  • What media have you found works best for cleaning brass?
  • Are there any particular brands or types that you recommend?
  • How long does the polishing process usually take for a batch of brass, say around 100 casings?
  • Is there anything I should avoid to keep from damaging my brass?

Any tips, tricks, or personal experiences you can share would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help.

I’ve tried several types of polishing media for brass, but walnut shell is my favorite. It gives a nice shine without scratching the surfaces. Plus, it’s relatively inexpensive!

Have you experimented with ceramic media? I’ve heard it can achieve a really high polish, but I’ve never used it myself.

Ceramic media can work wonders for brass. It really hones in on those tiny scratches and imperfections, giving a mirror-like finish. Just be cautious, as it can be a bit abrasive.

Does anyone have thoughts on metal medium? I’ve seen some recommendations, but it seems quite harsh compared to other options.

I personally steer clear of metal medium. While it does polish quickly, I’ve had instances where it left small scratches. Walnut shell all the way for me!

Valid point! I suppose it depends on how pristine you want your finish. Some folks prefer that super shiny look that metal media can provide.

Absolutely! For some, that high-polish look is a must. But let’s not forget convenience; walnut shells are super easy to work with. What’s everyone’s go-to when cleaning cases?

I love my vibrating tumbler with walnut shells and a little polish additive. It’s a game changer for cleaning brass. The results are always consistent!

That sounds great! Do you have any tips on what brands to use? I’ve been thinking of upgrading my setup.

You can’t go wrong with brands like Frankford Arsenal and Lyman. They have good quality products that last. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find something even better out there!

For brass polishing, I’ve had great success with corncob media. It leaves a nice shine and doesn’t damage the brass. Make sure to dry your cases fully before polishing, as moisture can cause issues.

I’ve also used walnut shell media, and while it takes a bit longer, it really gets into the nooks and crannies! Mix it with a bit of polishing compound for better results.

I find that prepping the brass is crucial. A quick rinse and drying can make the polishing more effective. Has anyone tried using a vibratory tumbler versus a rotary tumbler?

Absolutely! I use a vibratory tumbler, and I love how efficient it is. Just make sure not to over-polish, or you might wear down the brass too much.

I like adding a bit of mineral spirits to the media. It helps break down tarnish. Anyone else have techniques they find helpful?

Using mineral spirits sounds like a good idea! Has anyone tried different brands of polishing media? I’d love to hear comparisons.

I’ve settled on Lyman’s Turbo media. It seems to deliver consistent results, but it’s pricey. Worth it for the quality, though! What do you all think?

I’ve used it too! The shine is fantastic, but I wonder if it makes a difference for different calibers or just .45 ACP like I’ve done?

Hey all, I’m relatively new to reloading. Should I invest in a tumbler right away, or can I polish by hand without it? Any advice would be appreciated!
