Seeking Insights on Hornady ELD-X 6.5 Creedmoor

I’ve been doing some research on the Hornady ELD-X ammunition for my 6.5 Creedmoor and I’m keen to hear about your experiences.

From what I gather, this ammo is popular among hunters, but I need some real-world feedback on its performance.

Key Points of Interest:

  • Accuracy: How does it perform at different ranges?
  • Terminal Performance: What does it look like on game? Any reports on expansion or penetration?
  • Comparisons to Other Ammunition: Should I consider other options, or is this the way to go?
  • Overall Experience: Any successful hunts using this ammo? Any failures?

Format of Responses:

I’d love for everyone to share their thoughts in as much detail as possible.

  • Please mention the type of game hunted and distances shot.
  • If you have chronograph data, that would be awesome too!
  • Feel free to share any recommendations or tips that come to mind.

I’m really looking to gather a solid collection of insights before making my decision. Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve been using Hornady ELD-X in my 6.5 Creedmoor for long-range hunting and I’m impressed! They hold tight groups and perform well in wind. I shot a buck at 700 yards this season and was thrilled with the performance.

Absolutely, I had a similar experience! I tested them during a 12mph wind and still managed solid hits at 800 yards. The ELD-X really seems to excel at distance.

I’ve used the ELD-X for target shooting and found them to be quite accurate too. At 1000 yards, they maintained a great trajectory. I recommend them for anyone looking to push their limits.

That’s good to know! I was considering testing them at that range. Do you find they expand well on impact?

Yes! The expansion is impressive. I tested on a berm, and the results showed consistent mushrooming. They are designed for terminal performance, and it’s evident when shooting game.

I’ve shot them in various conditions: hot, cold, wet, and dry. They’ve performed reliably across the board. However, I believe bullet seating depth can affect accuracy significantly, so keep that in mind.

Great point. I’m still optimizing my loads. Have you found a specific seating depth that seems to work best with these bullets?

I’m around 0.020 off the lands. That gave me the best results in my rifle. Every barrel is different, though. Experimentation is key!

True! It’s part of the fun. I’ll definitely try adjusting my seating depth. Thanks for the tip!

I just hope they don’t explode on impact during deer season! But hey, even if they do, it could be explosive fun, right? :joy:

I’ve used the Hornady ELD-X in 6.5 Creedmoor for deer hunting, and the expansion is impressive! The bullets create significant wound channels and transfer energy effectively.

That sounds promising! Can you share more about the distance you shot? I’ve heard they perform well at range!

I shot a mule deer at around 250 yards with the ELD-X. The expansion was fantastic, causing a quick drop. I was really impressed with the energy transfer.

I’ve also used these bullets, and I love how they perform on elk. The wound channel is massive and really knocks them down hard.

That’s great to hear! Are there any specific conditions or scenarios where the ELD-X performed particularly well for you?

I found that the ELD-X does exceptionally well in tough conditions. Even in wet weather, it performed consistently. I shot a whitetail in heavy brush, and it made a clean pass-thru.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about the terminal performance on smaller game. Has anyone used it on hogs or coyotes?

I’m glad you asked! I shot a coyote with the ELD-X, and while it did expand well, I found I had to track it a bit. Not ideal for smaller game, in my opinion.

That matches what I’ve heard. Seems like it’s best suited for medium to large game. Still a great option overall!
