Looking for 6mm 06 Load Data – What Works Best?

I’m diving into the world of reloading and have decided to focus on the 6mm-06 cartridge. I’ve heard that this wildcat round offers some incredible performance, especially for precision shooting and hunting. However, I’m struggling to find consistent load data and would love to hear from those who have experience with it.

What I’m Looking For

I’m particularly interested in:

  • Recommended powder types and charge weights
  • Bullet weights and types that have worked well for you
  • Any specific primers you favor
  • Velocity figures you’ve achieved with your loads
  • Insights on accuracy and performance in different scenarios (hunting vs target shooting)

Why 6mm-06?

I’ve read that the 6mm-06 can be an amazing dual-purpose cartridge. The versatility it offers makes it appealing for both varmints and larger game. Plus, it seems to really shine in terms of flat trajectory and wind resistance, which I find important for longer shots.

Questions for the Community

  • Have you worked with the 6mm-06? If so, what load recipes have you found to be the most effective?
  • Are there any pitfalls or common mistakes you can warn me about while reloading for this cartridge?
  • Any resources or books you recommend for someone looking to master the 6mm-06?

I appreciate any advice you can throw my way. Trying to gather as much information as possible before I hit the range. Thanks in advance!

The 6mm 06 cartridge has quite a history, emerging from the classic .30-06 Springfield. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a balance of velocity and accuracy in a lighter caliber.

That’s interesting! I find the versatility of the 6mm 06 impressive, especially for hunting and precision shooting. What has been your experience with its recoil?

The recoil is manageable and certainly less than that of the .30-06, which makes it more enjoyable to shoot. I think it shines in terrain where lightweight options are beneficial.

Absolutely! And the ballistic characteristics are also impressive. It’s known for flat trajectories, which is great for long-range shooting.

Does anyone have specific load recipes they’ve had success with? I’m interested in getting the best performance out of my setup.

I’ve had great results with 87-95 grain bullets. I use Varget powder for my loads; it’s been consistent in my testing.

I’ve heard mixed results about using hybrid powders. Some people swear by them, while others prefer traditional powders like H4350. What’s everyone’s take?

I think it really comes down to personal preference and your specific setup. Ballistics can vary widely with different barrels and twist rates.

You all sound like scientists with all this powder talk! I just load to the max and hope for the best. Kidding aside, experimenting is half the fun, right?

Haha, that’s one way to approach it! I think getting solid load data can prevent some costly mistakes though. Anyone have a favorite manual or guide?

I refer to the Hornady manual quite a bit. The history and recommended loads for the 6mm 06 are really helpful for understanding its full capabilities!

I’m also on the hunt for reliable 6mm 06 load data! I’ve had great success with IMR4064 powder. It burns clean and provides consistent velocities. Anyone else feel the same?

I agree, IMR4064 is a solid choice! I’ve paired it with CCI BR2 primers for excellent results. They seem to handle the pressure well.

I prefer Varget for my 6mm 06 loads. It’s so versatile and gives me a tighter group. Anyone else find it works better than IMR4064?

Varget is fantastic! I’ve found it offers great consistency, but I still have a soft spot for IMR4064 for certain loads. It really depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

Has anyone tried Hodgdon Hybrid 100V? I’ve read it’s getting good reviews for the 6mm 06. I’m curious about the performance compared to Varget.

I experimented with it last month. It showed promise, but I ultimately came back to Varget for consistency. I’d recommend giving it a shot though!

What about primers? I’ve used Federal 210M and have liked the results. Trying to see if others have a preference that might outperform it.

I’ve had luck with CCI 200 primers. They ignite reliably and have worked great with my loads. What do you think, worth trying?
