Best Holster for S&W 686 Plus 3 Inch?

I’m on the hunt for a holster for my Smith & Wesson 686 Plus with a 3-inch barrel, and I could really use some advice. I’ve been looking at both inside-the-waistband (IWB) and outside-the-waistband (OWB) options, but I’m not sure what would work best for comfort and accessibility.

What I’m Looking For:

  • Fit and Comfort: I want something that fits snugly but isn’t uncomfortable to wear for extended periods.
  • Concealability: Since I’m considering using it for concealed carry often, it shouldn’t print too much.
  • Durability: The holster should be able to withstand regular use without compromising safety.

Questions:

  • Brands: Are there specific brands you would recommend that make holsters for this model?
  • Personal Experiences: If you own a holster for the S&W 686 Plus, what do you like or dislike about it?

Thanks for any help you can provide! Looking forward to your recommendations.

I’m a fan of OWB holsters for my S&W 686 Plus. The accessibility is great, and they provide solid retention. Plus, they’re comfortable for all-day wear.

I tried IWB holsters, but with a 3-inch, it’s a bit bulky for me. Anyone else have similar experiences with comfort?

I actually prefer shoulder holsters. They distribute the weight evenly and are fantastic for concealment under a jacket. What do others think?

Shoulder holsters are nice, but they can be awkward in cars, don’t you think? How do you handle that?

I’ve tried a retention holster for my 686 Plus, and it feels so secure. Perfect for someone who might be more active. What do you think about retention for casual use?

I think a retention holster is great for peace of mind, but they can take a bit longer to draw from. What’s your take on that?

I have both IWB and OWB options. IWB is good for warmer days when wearing a t-shirt, but OWB is more comfortable when layering. It’s all about your outfit choices!

Exactly! I switch depending on the season. Any recommendations on specific brands for IWB holsters?

Galco and Alien Gear make solid IWB holsters. I’ve had good luck with both. They hold well and are comfortable for long wear.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check those out. What about retention holsters? Any favorites?

For retention holsters, I’ve heard good things about Blackhawk and Safariland. They have great designs for active use. It’s worth exploring!

Those are solid choices! Retention is key for anyone active. Have you guys ever had any issues with drawing quickly?

No issues here, but I understand the concern! Practice makes perfect. Just find what feels comfortable for you.

I’ve had fun trying different holsters, but don’t forget to consider your wardrobe. I’ve put my holster on backward while rushing before! Not the best look.

I recommend looking into leather holsters for the S&W 686 Plus. They offer great comfort and a classic look, but can be bulky for some.

I’ve found that Kydex holsters are lighter and hold their shape better, but they can feel a bit rigid initially.

Nylon options are super versatile and often more affordable. Comfort-wise, they can be okay but may not be ideal for long duration wear.

True, but I feel close to my body with leather, especially when sitting for long periods. It’s just more forgiving.

Hybrid holsters are an interesting option too! They often combine the comfort of leather with the retention of Kydex. Has anyone tried them?
